An Exploration: Evil or Just a Jerk

Taking on a New Quest

Stories that I revisit or that resonate emotionally with me often have a memorable antagonist. With that in mind I embark on Lean Into Art Quest 3: Evil or Just a Jerk?

Villains from stories I've read, watched, or heard.

Morning Light Mountain

Story: The Commonwealth Saga (Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained)

A true alien being, cold, calculating and unrelenting - grows beyond the cold due to human contact and gains feelings such as disgust, rage, and revenge.

  • Villainous traits
    • Megalomaniac
    • Madness

Julia

Story: The Kind by Ryan Estrada

Not quite a villain in the story, yet is a force of nature threat due to being a lycanthrope. Might be a serial killer though we don’t know for certain. When she’s not a werewolf, she’s funny and clever though a bit standoffish.

  • Villainous Traits
    • Force of Nature

Thragg

Story: Invincible by Robert Kirkman "Invincible (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia")

Leader of the Viltrumites (a whole planet of super beings). He’s got the royal I’m above all things, especially you attitude. He’s a combination of calculating and rage monster and can back up his giant ego with super strength beyond any other in the Invincible universe.

  • Villainous Traits
    • Greater Good
    • Megalomaniac

Clarisse La Rue

Story: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

A brash brute, almost but not quite a bully. She’s just rough around the edges and you see her capacity for loyalty, friendship, and yet remain super brash as the series develops.

  • Villainous traits:
    • Just a Jerk (at least initially)

Luke Castellan

Story: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Luke is a tough demi-god with a huge chip on his shoulder and does many despicable things out of vengeance and belief that it’s also for the greater good.

  • Villainous traits:
    • Revenge
    • Greater Good

Shin Natsume

Story: Tenjho Tenge

An amazing character that does an incredible amount of damage to the other characters in the story yet also has the capacity for wisdom and kindness. He starts out seeking revenge for anyone that hurts his sister Maya and gives in to his long term dark feelings, anger, and sadness in part due to his super power “the dragon’s eye”. He hits almost every category of villain over the course of his story.

  • Villainous traits:
    • Madness
    • Revenge
    • Greater Good
    • Force of Nature
    • Sociopath
    • Tamas, or Dark Inertia

Mitsuomi Takayanagi

Story: Tenjho Tenge

The second villain, created as a result of both his upbringing to the be the ultimate martial artist and due to his experience and relationship with Shin Natsume.

  • Villainous traits:
    • Megalomaniac
